NSW Residents, Hydro Powerstation Petition 7

To the Honourable the Speaker and the Members of the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales.

The petition of the residents of New South Wales brings to the attention of the House their extreme concern about the current closure and the uncertain future of the Nymboida Hydro Electric Power Station.

When operating, the Power Station provides substantial renewable electricity to the grid and the resulting outflow of water is vital for the continued operation of the Nymboida Canoe Centre, for the ecological health of the waterways downstream, and for the many landowners who rely on this crucial water supply for their domestic and agricultural needs.

The Canoe Centre facilities and the creeks downstream from the Power Station also provide much-needed local employment, tourism, education and family recreation for the Clarence Valley and beyond.

The undersigned petitioners therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to guarantee that the Nymboida Hydro Electric Power Station will reopen in the near future and continue to provide green power as it has done for the previous 89 years.

I believe Nymboida power station should be kept running for it historical significance and the canoe centre’s world class facilities.

When did it shut down? I thought it was still running on half capacity?

It has been shut down since the pipeline burst in the floods of January 2013. There has since been a very small environmental flow that’s been reestablished but it’s only a very small flow for downstream pastoralists and fish stocks etc.

I’m from The Armidale School, and every year we stay at the Canoe Centre for our cadets camp and final expedition. This is quite disturbing news for me, as I love this trip. I did notice that the water levels were extremely low in the centre on our last trip (November 2013), and I sincerely hope that the station comes back into operation so that we can enjoy the rapids once again.

It is a sad state of affairs that we are not utilising such a valuable resource, both in hydro power and canoe and kayaking use. It has been so well used by the community it seems like a travesty!

I congradulate the people of Nymbodia with their push to keep the power station open, friends from Queensland were devastated when they couldn’t use the creek and its facilities.
You go to the Wet n Wild, Dreamworld on the gold coast and spend hundreds of dollars, at the canoe centre in Nymbodia you spend a fraction of the cost and the thrill ride is 10 times as long.
I imagine there will be many 4wd, camping and outdoor organisations willing to get on board and sign the petition.
